Antagonist

Opposes the protagonist

Aphorism

A wise, witty saying.

Anecdote

A brief story about an interesting, amusing, or strange even.

Elegy

A poem of mourning.

Epic

A long narrative poem.

Eulogy

A speech praising someone.

Fable

A brief story with animal characters.

Foil

Used to underscore a contrast

Irony

A contrast between what is said and what is meant

Oratory

The art of speaking in public

Parable

An illustrative moral story.

Paradox

A self-contradiction, but true.

Parody

A funny imitation.

Polemic

An aggressive attack on or refutation of something.

Protagonist

The central figure of a story, hero

Raconteur

A storyteller

Satire

A story written to ridicule human weaknesses.

Skit

A short humorous piece of writing.

Stereotype

An oversimplified image of a person

Vernacular

Ordinary language used in a region.

Assignment:

Place an example of each term on a new blog page that you call “SAT Literary Terms”.  Due by Nov. 3rd.

Know all of these terms and be prepared to take a quiz on November 4th.
