Prompts to Spark Discussion

These prompts will be shared as we have discussions in class. Each response to the question should contain at least 200 words and be a well-developed document.

  1. Think about your philosophy of technology over the course of the last few years. Has it evolved at all?  Now think about your philosophy of education. Has it changed much over the years?
  • How might the two, when combined, change your opinion of one or both?

Find support for your argument by researching these education theorists. Which of their theories best connects to your view of education?

  1.  What cultural implications does digital social media have on the world? Is there an impact on the world today and what might it hold for the future?

After viewing a number of interviews from this website, offer your ideas about how people use technology not just as a means of entertainment, but as a tool for both formal and informal learning.

  1. Many of you have said that technology has taken over your life and that you would prefer to have less of it. What do you really mean by that and how might such an opinion change or be unchanged over the course of time?

What parts of Jessica Picard’s article How Technology Has Taken Over Our Life do you agree or disagree with?

  1. Traditional approaches to learning oftentimes came from one source, the teacher, who presented content that he or she felt you needed to know. Recently, students found other ways of retrieving content by using new media and the teacher became more of a facilitator rather than the sole source of information.

Today there is a shift away from the teacher as facilitator and we have seen how students can learn independently and apart from having adult supervision in the room. How do you feel about this type of learning and what role does technology play in it?

Do you agree with Mike Gershon’s blog post called Independent Learning in the ClassroomIs this the best way to learn?

Explain how you have “learned how to learn” and offer alternatives to some of the traditional approaches you have experienced in your academic career.
