Flying Solo. Would You?

Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” experiments have shown that, in the absence of supervision or formal teaching, children can teach themselves and each other, if they’re motivated by curiosity and peer interest.

To what extent is this already happening?

  1. After watching Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in The Wall” I have determined that children are being given more freedom to take learning into their own hands. Now, every student has a chromebook that they can take home and to school every day. this gives them the opportunity to learn even when they aren’t being taught in a classroom. if a child is curious enough about something, they will want to learn it on their own. the research conducted shows that children can and will learn if given the right tools and circumstances. while teachers can be helpful, some children really don’t need them to learn. they can use problem solving skills like looking th answer up of asking friends and peers.

  2. I would like to reflect on the post made by Chris R on October 6, 2010 at 10:49 pm. He talks about how in that year, teachers would not trust students to conduct there own reasearch or even for them to work on their own. This is much different then education today. At our school we all have chromebooks, which means that we all have our own personal device in order to conduct independant research. For this reason I feel that the basis of not being trusted to work and conduct yourself has shifted since 2010. Students are now not only trusted, but given the technology to conduct their own research and work by themselves or with piers in an appropriate matter.

  3. I agree with this video due to the statements he brought up and the success of his ideas. One of his ideas were that students should be able to choose what they want to learn.I agree with this statement due to the fact kids are not really interested in what the school is teaching at the current point in time.If the students got to choose what they learn they will be more motivated and they will be able to study and learn something about something they already have a great interest. When the students come together they can benefit not only themselves but there friends and families and maybe give the next generation a better learning experience.

  4. Most kids in our time now don’t really talk with each other because we always have our phones in our faces. The only time we might talk with peers is during group work, which some people might find helpful, others, not so much. I feel the kids in Sugata Mitra’s experiment were able to work together better because they are still young and still very eager to talk to their peers. If someone tried this experiment on a group of teens or college students, the outcome probably wouldn’t be like the outcome for the younger kids. The older kids have already been exposed to the school system, and may consider it a pain to go to school and sit through about 8 periods of subjects they find boring. I feel like my generation just isn’t curious anymore, myself included. I think if we had been told that we could drive our own learning path, we might still be curious as teens. But since we were born and raised on our current education system, no one has interest in anything anymore, and it’s kinda sad, because no one has any passions or need to learn something that never knew. I feel the phrase “You learn something new everyday” only applies when you’re curious to learn something new everyday. And my generation just isn’t curious anymore.

  5. I would like to add onto the comment of Robert from October 7,2010 at 11:15 pm. He acknowledged the fact that students within the United States take technology for granted because we have such an efficient access to it. If technology was recently introduced, I believe that students, myself included, would be much more interested in learning and we would have more of a motivation to work. The use fo technology has also increased immensly, to the point where every student takes a chromebook home after school in order to complete work relating to school. Students are forced to complete activties revolving school and they must follow a repetitive system which overall decreases the goals and determination within a society of children. If we compare this concept to the children seen in India, they feel much more moitvated since technology was just introduced and it is a recent, uncommon tool. Overall, learning is porrible if the children are truly interest and if they don’t feel forced to complete an assignment that doesn’t entertain them.

  6. After watching this video I have realized that students have been given more freedom to take learning into their own hands. For example students today have been given a chromebook to help their learning. We can take them to and from school so when we are home we can still learn. By looking things up or just getting extra practice.

  7. Our system today is similar to the “hole in the wall” experiment, we are usually left on our own in situations and teach ourselves. The fact that young people in other countries can learn lessons on their own with the help of technology was interesting. These people most likely never used and/or heard of this technology, and yet they find out how to use them to a learning advantage. We try to do this, and some of us use computers incorrectly and are losing education advantage. We try to teach with the course of technology and let them learn with it, but not all people follow this way of teaching. And this hurts our future society. Our future generations should be more on the context that we should have a variety of ways to teach and learn, so this won’t be a repeating pattern of failure.

  8. I agree with the video Flying Solo Would You? I agree with this video because he does state that students should be able to choose what classes they want to take. Also, I want to reflect on the comment made by Joeg2023 that students nowadays have Chromebooks to do research. I do feel that some Chromebooks can be a problem such as students not remembering them. When students do have there Chromebooks they are useful because they can be used for homework research and etc. So, therefore, technology is useful and students are using the technology by using there chromebooks.

  9. After watching Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the wall”, I feel that today there is to some extent kids teaching themselves in the sense of their ability to access technology and use it towards their education. In schools today we are all proved Chromebooks to take home. I believe kids have the ability to teach themselves, but they need to be motivated. If they are not motivated, they won’t engage in their learning and won’t benefit from using the technology that is provided to them. Learning from a Chromebook may be a better style of learning for them. But, it also depends on the student. Some students may feel that they need a teacher or some may feel they only need technology for their learning. One of his ideas was that students should be able to choose what they want to learn. I agree with this statement due to the fact kids are not really interested in what the school is taught at the current point in time. If the students got to choose what they learn they will be more motivated and they will be able to study and learn something about something they already have an interest in.

  10. I thought that this video was really cool to watch and see how kids can control their own learning and if left alone they would try to solve the problem instead of giving up or doing something else. I do feel that this idea of letting kids control their own learning is happening to some extent in our schools. We are allowed to pick classes that pertain to our interests and what we feel we want to learn more about. School provides us with the opportunities and tools to be able to conduct our own learning outside the classroom. They provide us with chromebooks which have access to all of the information we could want to know. Although they don’t provide us with the time in class, the whole idea of this learning style is that the kids have to be interested and self motivated to learn more about the subject they are learning in class or whatever it is that interests them outside of class. Overall I think that there have been many technological advancements in the classroom but schools have not learned to adapt to the benefits that technology brings.

  11. After watching Sugata Mitra’s flying solo this is happing in every one of our classes when we learn a lesson we memorize it we use our Chromebooks and our phones to replace a teacher and to replace books when you need to learn something you will go to google because it is easy and better than going to the library and finding the book about the subject than reading its much simpler to type in whatever you need from rocket science to grass it would always be simple and easy to type it into google than to take time to read then apply to life or to hear from a teacher and apply rather than typing in five words and two clicks to have your answer

  12. After watching this video I have come to the realization that children can learn if they want to and take an interest in learning a certain subject. All children are capable of learning whatever they want if they have the right materials and technology. If children are truly interested in something and are competent in that area they can teach themselves and others. This isn’t happening to a satisfactory extent in most schools. Students can learn almost anything using technology and websites/databases. Now, children are capable of figuring out and learning how to use technology on their own without teachers and adults, in general, having to guide their every move.

  13. I agree that technology is changing and that the children that use it and In Flying Solo what it entails is that the students that once were not interested in the education that they have are now interested since they can teach themselves. Furthermore, students or children are now interested in technology today and back then since they can control their work and work with other students not surrounded by adults.

  14. After watching Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” I have come to a conclusion that children are now the power source of their own learning. If they have an interest in something they are most likely going to really interpret and learn about that and can teach themselves without a teacher. One of his ideas were that if a student has enough interest in something, they will learn it on their own. the research showed that students are now allowed to take control of their education and given the right materials, they can learn on there own hands with no guidance.

  15. After watching this video, I have figured out that children are becoming more advanced because of the technology that is being given to them. Technology is a starting point for children in terms of getting motivated to learn. This is shown in the video we watched in class because when the man gave the computer to the indian city, all the children began to have the want to learn numerous things. Technology has transformed students and their want to learn in different ways too. This is because for some people, it motivates them to learn, while with others, it distracts them from learning, and keeps them more interested on the screen in front of them.

  16. I agree with the video flying solo would you because all students should be able to choose there classes. In the video he states that pretty much exactly. Also students have had put learning in there own hands. For example all students now have chromebooks so they can do homework faster and easier. But also they can be bad if kids start playing games. In conclusion students deserve to choose there own classes.

  17. After watching the video ¨hole in the wall¨ i have came to c conclusion that now with new technology, we are coming to a better understanding that kids and children in education do not need teachers on them to learn. A few studies were done throughout this experiment. The man put a tv in the middle of the wall (hence the title) and the kids learned how to do things such as browse the internet, make songs and replay them to their friends. In the future we will start to see teachers just be supervision and the kids need to learn how take things into their own hands. Kids are being more dependent on themselves. In our classroom only few teachers teach without a teacher. I believe in 5-10 years kids will have a teacher but do their own studies. If the child has a interest to learn he/she will go ahead and do that

  18. After what Sugata Mitra said in the video, it’s indeed true. For example, children are able to teach themselves or other people on how to use technology. Today, we have our own phones, chromebooks, etc. and we use it all the time but can always find something new to learn. However, some of the stuff on the internet can be false, so they would need teachers to teach them certain things. Also, children these days are born into technology and clearly know how to use them. Though the children might need help with the internet, the adults wouldn’t even know how to use it because the internet was made later when we came along.

  19. when i watched this video i learned that kids are better at what they take interest in and can learn better on their own. children are capable of learning what they want because of technology. they can look up how to figure out a problem. kids learn by practicing and doing it by themselves.

  20. I would like to respond to a comment made by Charlied22 on January 25, 2019 at 8:10 am. He explained how the Sugata Mitra vision is coming true as technology is advancing and spreading, and that children don’t have to be taught about common core classes or lectured by teachers because they can learn about topics of interest on their own with technology. I agree with his point, but to a certain extent. I totally agree that technology is provoking the right things among students and opening up new learning opportunities. Students no longer have to sit in front of a teacher who is throwing tons of information at the because technology allows them to explore and learn things on their own. If you think about it, listening to a teacher just to memorize material for a test and then forgetting it is no good and does not prepare students for the future. The point I disagree with though is when he mentions how eventually students won’t need teachers at all because they can learn so much on their own just with technology. I personally feel as though a teacher will always be needed in a classroom for guidance and support, otherwise the whole idea of school would just be pointless. Also, I agree that the Sugata Mitra vision is coming true, but slowly and somewhat differently. Teachers nowadays stand up for 10 minutes, give us an assignment, and tell us to go on our chromebooks and do the assignment until the class is over. I think there will be always a teacher in a classroom, however their involvement to the classroom will lessen and the students will go up. So, I feel like his vision will come true but just in a slightly different way.

  21. To be honest, not much of this is happening, and after reading comments from about 10 ears ago, not much of this was happening then either. Our centered around the children following the teachers lead, and although in some classes, mostly English, the students play a more active role, it is still primarily the same. The teachers set up a curriculum and the students follow, and that repeats until they are out of the grade school system. Although the students are most likely capable of leading their own learning, it is still the way it always have been. There hasn’t been any significant change in school systems since the earliest comments (2009).

  22. The process used in this video would be very beneficial today. Just to get straight to the question this isn’t really happening as much today. As stated in the video “if children are motivated education will occur”. For students today this is a struggle, some students today arent very motivated to learn and be educated. As for the method used giving the students a computer or two and letting them try and figure out a topic for themselves, wouldn’t really work today. only because of the portable technology that is in most of our pockets. Our phones are a major distraction that would be used instead of doing the work assigned.

  23. I would like to add on to the comment of Robert from October 7,2010 at 11:15 pm. He mentioned how students within the United States take technology for granted because we have such efficient access to It. If Technolgy was just being introduced students would be like the children in the video. I hear the statement that you learn something new every day but I believe kids have the ability to teach themselves, but they need to be motivated. In schools today, students are becoming less motivated and need a new style of learning. Students are forced to complete activities revolving school and they must follow a repetitive system that overall decrease the goals and determination within a society of children. This makes children not want to do the work because it doesn’t entertain them.

  24. Responding to what Natalie O said in 2010, I agree with her. This is because students don’t take advantage and appreciate the education given to then. While yes, children in India get to choose what they study, there are still very few children getting further education. I know that since then the numbers of education in India have increased, however, they probably don’t take for granted their education like we do. Children today, including myself, don’t appreciate all the teachers, resources and technology we have in our school system. This is most likely because we were born into the system being this way and we are usually negligent to the fact that other kids don’t have this opportunity. For example, the kids in India only had a computer in the wall and nothing else, but by collaborating with one another, they were able to learn and expand their understanding of topics. Overall, this has shown me that we could be taking more control of our education and we sometimes take our education for granted.

  25. Sugata Mitra is showing to the world that kids can learn by themselves and will teach and learn the things they are interested in. There has to be motivation, as he was saying with the Grandmother method. Just having support is an important factor in motivation, but also the students need to be engaged in order to want to focus. This is happening to a mild extent in our schools, where each student is able to design their schedule to take the electives that interest them, but unlike in other countries, our learning is still standardized and over-powering that even if we try to do something about it the chances are it wont work. This is because of how enforced policies are and how much power is given to the authority figure, who in this case are the administrators. People say that the education system is factorial like the industrial revolution and uses ideas from the enlightenment, but I personally think that we can take it back even further and say that our education systems are run more like a monarchy. We have the administrators as the monarchs who have absolute power, the faculty and staff who work as the government, under the monarch but still holds power, and the students as the subjugates, those forced to work under the powers of the monarch and government in the ways that they are enforcing. It took high determination, many fights, and a long time for the old monarchy ways to be reformed, so if that is how our system is set up, who knows how long it will take us to reform our education?

  26. In today’s generation, education is not entirely encouraged for self-learning. The school system does not have much of the teaching shown by the ‘Hole in the Wall’ video. While there are many resources for learning itself, it isn’t encouraged to be learned in today’s schooling. However, there have been more freedoms provided for students and children in general, as some of the older comments state, students have been provided things like Chromebooks to conduct their own research to help themself in their own learning. Other things like the Granny Method, which was grandmas teaching students themselves and encouraging them, is sometimes reflected in our school, with encouragement from some teachers but not from others.

  27. I believe that in the absence of supervision or formal teaching, children can teach themselves and each other if they’re motivated by curiosity and peer interest. All students have access to Chromebooks now, and all students have there own work to do at school and at home. With the resource of the Chromebooks, students can use it if they have questions on there homework or projects. This is students pursuing their own education. The students are out of school, no teachers there to help them or people to ask help for. With trying to find the information they need to successfully complete their homework, their teaching themselves the information they need, on there own.

  28. After watching Sugata Mitra’s TED talk and his “Hole in The Wall” experiments, I know now that children can learn what they want in the absence of a teacher if they are motivated to do so by curiosity. I think this idea is reinforced with technology, as back then you had to listen to what the teacher said as all the information to be learned was taught by the teacher or read in books. Nowadays, information can be found anywhere, giving young people access to all knowledge. Despite this, school systems still enforce learning the same subjects, even if a student is not interested in it. The children in the video had incentive to learn, they were having fun, and also doing it on their own (with the help of others). Because they were not told what to do, it gave them freedom, and therefore they were motivated. In today´s school system, there is some freedom, by choosing electives, but you still have to take all of the core classes, and in most classes you are directed by the teacher so we are not leading our education much. However, some steps are being taken to improve this. Kids having Chromebooks helps them do their own learning without a teacher, and electives give them interest in their own learning. Also there are some choices of work sometimes, but it is still mainly being told what to do by the system, so therefore kids are beginning to learn on their own, but these are just baby steps. They are not motivated and are fed up of the system.

  29. I believe that the technology that was given to the children was a great tool that they used to teach themselves new things. Even though the teacher had left the room they still taught themself due to the power of the computer. I believe this still happens today because now we have chromebooks and much of the work is on the chromebooks. Although we take our computers for granted many countries do not have the things we have access to. We basically are using our computers to teach ourselves. We get all of our information and resources from computers.

  30. After watching this video, I believe that to a certain extent ‘flying solo’ with the use of technology can be as beneficial as learning with a group of kids and a teacher; but is it really? For instance, these experiments took place in India, where their education, economy, society, and way of life is much different than other places, such as the United States. I bring this up because they have a different set of curiosities than we do. For instance, as a students, I have grown up with this type of technology my entire life. In addition, my education has also covered much more diverse information to extensive levels. Making it much different than students in India. So is ‘flying solo’ really the way to go; I believe that it is not. Not only is our overall education different, but the teachers are able to guide us in a direction of where we WANT to go and allow us to learn about many other things and topics that exist, beyond just what we want to learn about.

  31. After watching this video, I can come to the conclusion that some students are able to learn despite the absence of their teachers. In other words, the students who are given material and no further instructions are able to figure it out and get their task done. This is done because of their interest in the topic they are trying to learn and they have the motivation to do so, along with the help of technology. See, technology has greatly impacted our society. It has become a resource for many students and is very easy to access, making it very influential in the educational world. This “hole in the wall” experiment is similar to today’s learning because students these days having the ability to further their education on their own. To further explain, students today, with the right motivation, are able to learn new subjects that they have a desire for, showing that with the right amount of determination and technology, students are able to learn new, interesting topics. Technology grants this privilege because it allows students to gain a good, reliable resource for students to base their learning off of and extend their learning ability.

  32. After watching Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in The Wall” I have found out that children are being held more responsible from their education. In the video it explained how when children or any age of students want to learn, or find out a specific piece of information they are motivated to find it. Depending on how motivated someone is, they will be determined to find out new information and expand their knowledge. In the video they did a study in which included children who have never used technology before. They started from scratch not knowing a thing, and were so motivated to find out how to work different types of technology. They were able to teach themselves a new skill because of how invested in it they truly were. Children having interest and being excited to learn, is what fuels learning all together. If children are invested in their education and are excited to learn they will productively learn and become smarter due to their curiosity in wanting to learn. The children were able to memorize the information the computer showed them, allowing them to learn it and keep it in their brain at all times. Technology is able to teach students valuable information and it is necessary to their education and for them to be successful. A lot of students today don’t come to school with a positive attitude ready, prepared and excited to learn, instead they have a negative attitude about everything related to work and school. This proves how this video is not happening and is not being demonstrated today. Students today need a guide, their teacher, to help them know what to learn, how to learn it and such like that. It is extremely hard to conduct your own education, it requires a lot of work and determination. This video is a very good example of what the educational system should strive for. Everything Sugata Mitra said made an impact and was proven to work and be true. If we can try this method with people today, with the right tools, it should guarantee success for the people interested enough. In this video children are given the freedom to learn on their own and be curious and base what they want to learn off of the questions they ask themselves. This is what makes them learn better and have a good grasp of understanding and comprehending. Group work is also another key strategy for teaching, others ideas not only encourage discussion and questions it is also a way for problem solving.

  33. After watching Sugata Mitra’s “Hole in the Wall” I believe that children have been given more opportunities to learn independently and they have been able to take control of their own learning more so now. Based on the video, I believe that students are more than capable of teaching themselves new material and learning on their own. Based on my own experiences, I think that at school we are not given complete control of our learning, but we do have a lot of independence. For example, we all have our own chromebooks, allowing us to do any independent research that we wish. In addition, a lot of my classes are more worksheets that we have to discuss in groups to figure out rather than a teacher always lecturing while students take notes. I would also like to respond to a point made by chrisr93 on October 6, 2010, when he says that the teachers do not trust their students enough to conduct their own research. I now think that a lot has changed since then and we are trusted by our teachers a lot more than students were in the past, and they trust us to teach ourselves a lot of information.

  34. I believe that without a teacher or supervision watching a student, a child will learn only if they are willing to learn. A student will learn if they are given the materials that they need and if they are motivated to learn. Flying solo would work only with students who are motivated to learn, if a class of students who are not willing to learn, this would not work. In this generation in America, I would not see flying solo working, but in other countries that have a limited amount of education and are not always learning, flying solo would work.

  35. After watching ” Hole in Wall, it is evident that giving children the freedom to chose what they want to learn and letting them do it at their own pace is an efficient way to promote education, nowadays children see going to school as a punishment when its true intention is to prepare them for the future. This idea is lightly applied in our school by letting choose certain classes but the freedom is limited because there are classes that we are required to take even though we might not be interested in. The “Granny Method” was a smart way to offer students support without having them see adults as dictators who only expect things with no intention of helping the Granny Methods showed the kids that there was someone to support them even though their journey was mostly independent.

  36. While how much students can control their learning has gone up in recent times, there is still the lack of absence from teachers. This can be seen in the type of work we do now in school. A lot of what we do now tends to be more open ended/ research projects. This allows students to learn much more by themselves than they would of other wise. The reason this isn’t done to the extent stated in the video is because teachers still have a decent affect on what people do. In these projects, there is usually some expectation or rubric to follow telling students what to do. Teachers also usually give certain assignments during projects to assure that students are doing what they want. This usually results in what appears to be more self conducted work, but actually is much more controlled by what not only the teachers what but the school system wants from its students as a whole.

  37. Based on the video I can conclude that by giving a child freedom to learn in a way that works for them you can make learning fun for them and make them want to learn. It seems that many students today are only going to school because they are forced to but they don’t actually enjoy it. This is sad because it completely ruins the whole original purpose of the school. By giving students their own chromebooks and allowing them to use technology to express their creativity and imagination we are getting them excited about learning which helps all types of students thrive in the classroom which is the main goal at the end of the day.

  38. After watching the flying solo video by Sugata Mitra, I have realized that with new technology entering the education systems, students have had to become much more responsible for their own work. Also, many students are able to learn despite the absence of their teachers. In other words, the students who are given material and no further instructions are able to figure it out and get their task done. They are able to figure out how to use the technology that they have been given on their own and don’t need assistance form the teacher. One example of where this happened was shown in the video. These children, from India, were given new devices of technology that they had to figure out how to use on their own and many of them did. BY doing this it also improved their teamwork skills because they were collectively figuring out how to work this piece of technology. However, the technology had also enhanced their learning as many of them started to individually grow in topics and subjects that they were previously struggling with. When given the tools to learn, students will learn just fine, even without a teacher in the classroom, all they need is motivation. Technology had given these kids motivation to learn new things. These students were given freedom with their learning. This some what occurs in our education system today because students can take electives that they want to take and that they will actually want to learn. They will pay attention much more in these classes, rather than classes that they are bored by and do not want to be in. This is how technology influences education and can even enhance our learning.

  39. After watching this video I believe kids do need help in different subjects because each kid is different in their own ways. One kid might need help in math and other kids might in help in English. By now having technology nowadays kids can use the internet to research things they need help with or questions they have. Really anything that they need help with. Which is way better for kids to do on their own and be more independent. Using the internet and being independent will teach kids how to do things on their own and not needing a teacher to lead them. Not needing a teacher all the time. As Jordanh23 states, “Contribute to how effective independent learning using solely technology can be, an important one being the will of the student. Different students need different learning environments, as different students have different capacities for motivation to do work.” Meaning that kids learn in their different ways and it is better to promote that ability to learn without needing a teacher and using the internet as a faster way to get information.

  40. After watching Sugata Mitra’s, “Hole in the Wall,” it is clear that when kids are left alone to learn something, they are able to do it. This productivity increases, even more, when kids work in groups or they are interested in the topic. Students in India were able to figure out how to program a computer after just 2 months and never seeing one before. They collaborate and figure out how to use it, and then use it to see how it really works. A different group of students were given a computer by Mitra and were told to take a quiz on the topic they were researching and the average was 76%, then they took the same quiz, 2 months later with no computer and no partners. The average stayed the same though. This is because the students are talking to each other and collaborating on the topics and this basically keeps it in their brains so they remember it later when they took the quiz the second time. Mitra’s experiment really brings out the best in kids. 10-year-olds are learning the science that juniors in high school are learning and by themselves. I feel like his research only works with younger kids or kids who don’t know much about computers because it is new and interesting to them while when kids like us use computers, it’s an everyday thing so it isn’t that interesting and we won’t get anything done. It also helps that the kids are interested and engaged in the topic they are researching. Students in the U.S. are privileged and aren’t interested in anything but the newest games so learning becomes a tougher task. Mitra’s experiment was a great idea that should be used more, but it can’t be used in some places the way it was used in the video because of who we are and how we live.

  41. I agree with Sugata Mitra that kids will learn about something if they are interested or want to know something. Kids are going to have a hard time learning about something that they don’t have interest in because then there’s no motivation. I think this relates to how education is nowadays because kids just take technology for granted since kids don’t believe we need the education teachers are trying to teach. So that leaves the student feeling bored and feeling like their wasting their time. But kids actually learn when they chose to be educated about their interests. For example we get to pick electives which are classes of our choice that we chose based on what we are interested in and want to learn

  42. Technology has made a great impact on students learning environments, We are able to learn more independently. Although we are able to learn more independently we do not necessarily do it. Students today in most places have no curiosity or drive pushing them to learn new things on their own. Through the video we saw how young kids were able to learn so many different things on their own without any help except from each other. Even though this would be great if this was happening in our society today, it isn’t. I mean it is to a certain extent but these days kids just get their work done to get it done. They don’t care about anything else but getting it done. If their was curiosity making us think more that would be nice but we have grown up in this school system where you only have to get a simple answer of a question and you will get an A. There is no blocks that are causing us to have to do further thinking. If the school system was not so straight forward then we might have more thoughts instead of just being in one mindset.

  43. The whole in the wall video showed kids with a lot of curiosity and thoughts using technology for the first time alone. Technology has helped education here a lot. The technology is helping students learn without the help of a teacher. In the video the kids were very intrigued with what was happening to the computer and what they could find out on it. Today there is only a handful amount of students that are willing to learn on their own. Most students just work to answer the question and get an A. They do not want to deep into the question more and find more information. The students just want to follow the school system to get an A. THe idea in the video was good and showed that we do have the ability to learn on our own but in reality in a society like this no one would choose to learn by themselves and get smarted on their own . If the school system wasn’t as basic and standard then maybe there would be a bit more of curiosity but the school system is, Answer question, Get good grades, Succeed. This process is not furthering your education. Its all just a memorization game to see the outcome of your success and if your not good at memorizing then its your loss.

  44. I agree with ChrisR’s comment he made on October, 6, 2010. He made a very interesting point where he had not experienced a teacher give a student power or trust them to conduct their own work. He says that if the teacher isn’t finding time to swerve a little from their original plan and letting the student do something instead of ordering them then they are not doing their job. He had answered your question, To what extent is this happening?, he’d said that it wasn’t happening that much. As much as he was motivated with curiosity and peer interest, the teachers he’s dealt with have not used that to their teaching. I would say that in this time teachers do let their students do things on their own definitely but still I feel like not all the teachers are using this to their advantage. Even now ten years later teachers still seem almost the same with most still using this older method of teaching when they should be using something different to appeal to this new audience. I have seen a lot more teachers incorporating technology in their teachings. But still with the teachers i’ve seen not as much would let their students engage in activities on their own terms and still use this sort of military style of teaching.

  45. The hole in the wall video showed curiosity in technology among young children. Technology is progressively daily and now is becoming the future. Computers being introduced to children introduces them to whole new asset of ideas in the modern world. It puts so much information at their finger tips. The children in India were introduced to computers for a month before the man came back to check in on their progress. The results showed that children who didn’t know any english had developed progress in the language. Along with that they learned new computer skills in such a short amount of time. Even some of the kids would tell the teachers facts that they didn’t even know about. The computer technology introduced to the children acted as a huge breakthrough in knowledge and recreating learning in a huge way.

  46. I believe that the reason that some kids are motivated to learn things by themselves is because they want to learn because kids are required to get an education and there are certain classes we’re required to take inorder to graduate, school becomes something a lot of kids dislike because they have very little freedoms

  47. This video shows just how greatly small bits of technology can enhance a child’s learning, growth, and development. For example, the hole in the wall provided a large learning chance for kids around India. To us, this seems minuscule and small but to these uneducated children it was extreme and they learned greatly from it.

  48. After watching Sugata Mitra´s ¨A Whole in the Wall,¨ I see some things that are happening in my school and others that are not. First, I see a lot of the technology factors going on at my school. For example, we all have our own chromebooks that we recieved in middle school and have multiple computer labs throughout the school. The video talked a lot about how technology is helping kids and I would definetly agree with that statement. Having a chromebook has helped me a lot and I use it for school all the time. But, one thing that is not happening in my school is the independence factor. Sure, we do get independence, but to a certian extent. We don´t get to pick what we want to learn. We pick electives, but then their are some classes that we are forced to take. But, in the video these kids were given so much independence. Their main teacher was an elderly woman who had no idea what she was doing and Mitra kept on flying off to the other side of the world whenever he gave the kids a task to do. Personally, I am fine with the amount of independence we are given as students. But, I do believe that many teachers have to take a step back for a minute and really ask themselves: Is what we are teaching today going to help our students in the future? More than once, the answer will be no.

  49. After watching the video, I saw that children were being given more freedom with what they want to learn. With his experiment, he has proved that with the interest, they can learn thing they want to learn with out a teacher.

  50. I do not believe our current education system is even close to what Sugatra Mitra has done with his hole in the wall experiment, as even when we are allowed to use our chromebooks, many useful and informative sites are blocked by Securly, and that’s when we are even allowed to go online. Most of our learning is just teachers telling us what to write down, and then how to apply it to a test, or some other assessment. We are almost never allowed to approach learning on our own terms, and are instead forced to follow the arbitrary rules of our teachers view for our education. I believe that if children were allowed to handle their own education, the teacher could then focus their time on helping those who are not that adept at learning for themselves, thus giving the teacher a job to do, and making sure no student is left behind.
