This is the test:

                                             Short Story Test

1.  After reading “The Black Cat”, use specific details (who, what, where and when) to explain the following elements of plot: 
   

a.  Exposition-

  1.       Characters
  2.       Settings
  3.       Background Information

 b. Rising Action

  1. What is the struggle, complication, problem or conflict?
  2. Is it internal or external?

 c.  Climax-

     Using lots of details, describe the confrontation the main character has with the conflict. 

d.  Falling Action-

  1. What is the outcome of the confrontation scene?
  2. Who is impacted by what happened?
  3. What new problems or action have developed?

 e. Resolution-

  1. How does the story end?
  2. How is the conflict resolved?
  3. How is the main character changed?
  4. How are others in the story changed?

2.  Answer the following questions about the author and then, in a 250 word essay, explain what his main      idea was in the story.

  1. Why did the author write this story?
  2. What is a major point he is trying to make?
  3. How does he communicate his message by using characters, settings and the plot?
  4. What might these things represent?
  5. e. What is your opinion of the book?
  1. The answers to question 1 are due on your blog on November 5th.
  2. The answers to question 2 are due on your blog on November 7th.
  3. The essay portion of the  test is due on your blog on November 12th.
